
South Portland is located on the southern coast of the State of Maine and is Maine's fourth largest city and the second largest in the region. A coastal community of 24,000 residents, South Portland encompasses approximately 13 square miles.
South Portland sits at the entrance to Portland Harbor and has miles of waterfront along the harbor, Fore River, and Casco Bay. South Portland is an inviting community with sights that create vivid and lasting impressions. South Portland has often been referred to as two cities, with the western half hosting The Maine Mall, Portland Jetport and high tech companies while the eastern half of the city supports Southern Maine Community College, Willard Beach, several parks and the municipal boat ramp. The Maine Mall opened its first 20 stores in August 1971 and is an easy drive from the neighboring towns of Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, Portland, and Westbrook. This popular mall covers 1.2 million square feet and provides a true entertainment experience that includes shopping and dining.
If you enjoy exploring on foot or bike, South Portland has been a state leader in bicycle and pedestrian trail development. The first trail developed within the city was the 1.6 mile Spring Point Shoreway Trail. South Portland later developed the Greenbelt Walkway located near Bug Light and continues 5.7 miles to the Scarborough town line. South Portland's superb location affords exceptional bayside views of Casco Bay, several scenic islands and other spectacular scenery worthy of a postcard. Scenes like those of elegant Portland Breakwater Lighthouse and the spark-plug style Spring Point Ledge Light are undeniably charming.
